TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity announced the Miami area private-sector employment decreased by 61,700 jobs (-5.7 percent) over the year. The Miami area’s unemployment rate was 8.8 percent in October.
The industries losing the most jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (-26,900 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (-14,000 jobs); government (-13,200 jobs); and education and health services (-11,900 jobs). Three major industries gained jobs over the year in October 2020: construction (+1,400 jobs); manufacturing (+1,100 jobs); and financial activities (+900 jobs).
Statewide, the number of private-sector jobs increased 61,100, up 0.8 percent from September 2020. Florida’s unemployment rate decreased to 6.5 percent in October 2020. Florida’s labor force was down 14,000 (-0.1 percent) over the month.
