Vilano Beach (St. Johns County) - Designated: 1999
Vilano Beach in St. John's County is located about two miles from St. Augustine, along the Atlantic Ocean, in Northeast Florida. The area was platted and named Vilano Beach in the "Florida Land Boom" of the 1920s. Due to the Depression of the 1930s, virtually all the commercial and residential lots in this community remained vacant until after World War II. With the advent of touring motorists, small motels were built in the late 1940s and early 1950s along Vilano Road. Several of these motels are still in service today. The main goals of the community's visioning document, adopted by the St. Johns County Commission in the Spring of 1999, is to become a "sustainable" waterfront community providing for revitalization of the business district with a town center and the addition of services for the residential community.
