San Carlos Island (Lee County) - Designated: 1997

Designated as one of the first Waterfronts Florida Partnership communities in 1997, San Carlos Island has remained attentive to its waterfront revitalization. Located on Mantanzas Pass, San Carlos Island is a one-mile long working waterfront community. For six months of the year, the waterfront is highly active with fishing and shrimping activity, as well as other related industries. Its determination to maintain traditional working waterfront operations despite struggles with zoning flexibility is its key issue. The community prides itself on its public education regarding the health of sea grass and mangrove communities and how they relate to the health of the bay and the fishing industry.
