Panacea (Wakulla County) - Designated: 2001
Located in Wakulla County alongside Dickerson Bay, Panacea is a small fishing village that was established as a tourist destination because on the "healing powers" of its natural springs. After tourism faltered during the Great Depression, commercial fishering, crabbing and oyster harvesting thrived in the area. The commercial fishing culture, however, has dwindled and just a handful of fishermen remain. The community celebrates its heritage and culture in its annual Blue Crab Festival, its maritime history museum and its welcome center. Future plans include reestablishing a tourism base in the community and restoring the historic Panacea Mineral Springs area.
