Fort Myers (Lee County) - Designated: 2009

The Caloosahatchee River has long played an instrumental role in Fort Myers history and culture. The city was founded along the Caloosahatchee River in the 1850s as a military outpost in the Seminole Wars and was later used as a Union outpost during the Civil War. Once retired from military service, the city's waterfront became a vital center of commerce, recreation, and urban activity. While the city's waterfront has recently become under used, the Fort Myers community hopes to recapture the waterfront's historically lively character and reactivate it as a focal point of the Fort Myers community.
