GOVERNOR SCOTT PROCLAIMS MILITARY SPOUSE RECOGNITION MONTH IN FLORIDA Tallahassee, Fla. – Agency for Workforce Innovation Director Cynthia R. Lorenzo and Workforce Florida President/CEO Chris Hart IV today jointly announced that Governor Rick Scott has proclaimed May Military Spouse Recognition Month in Florida. In keeping with Governor Scott’s priority of supporting our military men and women and their families, his proclamation acknowledges the many contributions military spouses make to Florida and their local communities. Approximately 285,000 family members of military personnel call Florida home. As noted in Governor Scott’s proclamation, military spouses typically shoulder significant responsibilities for maintaining these households when active duty husbands or wives are deployed and in harm’s way. Military families face a variety of challenges including frequent relocations, recurring deployments, and lengthy periods of separation during periods of conflict, and the state is committed to ensuring a variety of resources are available to assist. These resources include employment services geared specifically to meet the unique needs of military family members. Florida’s workforce system has eight regional advocates at seven locations dedicated to connecting military spouses and dependents with new training and employment opportunities through the state’s Military Family Employment Advocacy Program. Of the military family members receiving employment services from these advocates, more than 3,000 were hired in 2010, accounting for more than $34.2 million in wages. “The Agency for Workforce Innovation is proud to serve those who serve our country by helping to connect their spouses with employment opportunities,” said Director Lorenzo. “Florida’s employers also benefit from military spouses’ valuable experience, dedication and service, providing a win-win for their families and our communities.” “Florida’s military spouses are courageous, innovative, strong and talented,” said President Hart. “We appreciate their contributions to Florida’s reputation for having one of the best qualified workforces in our nation.” Located at One-Stop Career Centers near every major military facility in the state, the advocates help military spouses and other family members through one-on-one assessments, resumé and interviewing assistance, career counseling, job search and placement help, and support throughout the process of finding work.
