Labor Day Message from Agency for Workforce Innovation
Director Cynthia Lorenzo

Each year, Labor Day provides us the opportunity to honor the talented and hard-working men and women whose dedication to their jobs and communities drives Florida’s economy. This acknowledgement is especially meaningful during challenging economic times, with so many people working diligently to find innovative ways of doing business and harnessing the talent of Florida’s workforce to turn our economy around.

Many of our dedicated workers are business owners too – more than 85 percent of Florida employers have fewer than 10 employees. Some of these men and women are entrepreneurs whose great ideas over the past few years are now providing work to support their families, employ others and help get our state back on track. At the Agency for Workforce Innovation, we applaud these great entrepreneurs and job creators whose vision and hard work are critical to Florida’s growth and prosperity.

This Labor Day also provides us an excellent opportunity to look to the future of Florida’s workforce system and how its partners can better serve our employers, job seekers, and the businesses we will bring to our state in the coming years. On October 1, the doors will open on the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, ushering in a new era of collaboration in community, economic and workforce development. We are energized by this transition which will allow us to forge new connections between state, business and community leaders to promote job creation and economic success.

Labor Day is an appropriate time as well to pledge our continued efforts to get Floridians back to work. Over the past year, our workforce system helped more than 568,000 people find jobs. Since Governor Scott took office in January, 64,300 jobs have been created in Florida.

This is a pivotal time for our state. Together with our partners, we are committed to positioning our state as the No. 1 place to do business and supporting the Governor’s vision of a streamlined, more efficient and business-friendly government. We will continue to ensure Florida workers are prepared for jobs of the 21st century and businesses have the talent they need to succeed in a global economy.
