Sep 30, 2011

DEO expanded website goes live tonight, doors open for business Monday

Tallahassee, Fla. – As authorized by Florida law, Florida’s new Department of Economic Opportunity officially becomes the state’s one-stop shop for economic and community development on Saturday, October 1. The new department’s website goes live this evening, while the department opens for business Monday morning, October 3.

By combining the Agency for Workforce Innovation, Department of Community Affairs and the Governor’s Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development, Florida now has a streamlined approach for promoting business and job growth.

“There’s no doubt that Governor Scott is getting Florida back to work, and the launch of the Department of Economic Opportunity is a crucial component of his vision for making Florida the most business friendly state in the nation,” said DEO Executive Director Doug Darling. “This department consolidates the state’s economic development and job creation entities that will work closely with Enterprise Florida Inc.”

The official DEO website will be located at, which is the same URL previously used by the Agency for Workforce Innovation. The updated and expanded website will have a new look, brand and feel, providing access to key subject areas, including:

  • Business Growth and Partnerships
  • Labor Market Information
  • Community Planning and Development
  • Job Seekers and Community Services
  • Workforce Board Resources

Floridians needing Unemployment Compensation information can still link directly from the new site’s front page, and will also have immediate access to a wealth of employment resources. Additionally, the unemployment compensation hotline will remain the same at (800) 204-2418 for questions related to claims.

Please note, the new department’s media/communications phone number will be (850) 617-5600.

An equal opportunity employer/program.  Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.
