Governor Crist Appoints Cynthia Lorenzo to Head Agency for Workforce Innovation

TALLAHASSEE – Governor Charlie Crist today appointed Cynthia Lorenzo of Tallahassee as Director of the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation. She has served as Interim Director of the agency since February 2, 2009, and previously as Deputy Director since February 2007.

“Cynthia has done a tremendous job at the helm of the agency so critical to assisting Floridians who are struggling during this challenging economic climate, including distributing $3.7 billion in benefits during the past year to Floridians searching for work,” Governor Crist said.  “I applaud her commitment to working together with our workforce partners who are providing employment services and training to Floridians.”

Before joining the Agency for Workforce Innovation, Lorenzo served at the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, beginning in 2005 as communications director and later as chief of staff and Interim Secretary. Previously, she served for seven years in the communications office of the Florida Department of Transportation.  Lorenzo graduated from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s in business administration in 1992.

The Agency for Workforce Innovation directly administers the state’s workforce development, unemployment compensation, labor market statistics and early learning programs.  The agency’s Office of Early Learning provides oversight of Florida’s school readiness programs and is the lead entity for implementing the state’s highly successful Voluntary Prekindergarten program.
