The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program provides federal money to non-profit agencies and local governments so they can assist low-income families with home heating and cooling costs.
This program provides grants directly to local county governments and non-profit agencies who then determines who will receive assistance. Applicants must apply within the county they reside.
The department provides the following services:
- Applies for funding from the Federal Government and distributes it to local agency providers
- Monitors local agency providers to ensure that they administer the funding in compliance with state and federal laws and rules
- Provides technical assistance to local agency providers to help them comply with the requirements
The Department of Economic Opportunity does not have applications and does not provide direct assistance. Instead, you must contact the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program agency in your area to obtain an application and to apply for assistance.
