St. Marks (Wakulla County) - Designated: 2007

St. Marks is the only city on the St. Marks or Wakulla Rivers and is one of the oldest in the state. It has almost 500 years of European-American history and Paleoindians were here over 10,000 years ago. Today, San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park and the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad Trail are permanent reminders of the rich and eventful past that this "laid-back" community is preserving and enhancing through its revitalization plans. St. Marks is a small community just sixteen miles south of Florida's capital and is surrounded by the natural beauty of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and its rich natural resources. Visitors and residents alike enjoy biking on the bike trail, hiking and birding in the nearby National Forest and Wildlife Refuge, recreational and commercial fishing, paddling in the St. Marks and Wakulla Rivers, and easy access to the Gulf of Mexico.
