Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach (Nassau County) - Designated: 2005

Located just south of the Georgia state line in Nassau County, Fernandina Beach is described by many as a prime example of a true working waterfront. Scattered along the banks of the Amelia River are two working paper mills, a deepwater port, and a small commercial fishing fleet. Although Fernandina Beach claims to be the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry, businesses and fishermen are adapting to compete with the low price of imported seafood. Also known for its array of historical architecture, buildings in the waterfront district reflect late 19th and early 20th century development. Fernandina Beach was designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of its Dozen Distinctive Designations of 2002.
